Post-16 Advice Night – TONIGHT!

Tonight we will be hosting a Post-16 Advice Evening in the Drama Hall from 4:30-6:00pm.  This event is directly aimed at supporting our Year 11 students in making decisions about their next educational step after their time at The Dean Academy.  This will be an opportunity for students, parents and carers to speak directly with a range of local providers who can give information about course choices, apprenticeships, applications and much more.  Our currently confirmed attendees are as follows:

  • Gloucestershire College (GlosCol) – including a representative from the Advice and Guidance team, for impartial advice, a representative for the Apprenticeship team.
  • Wyedean School and Sixth Form Centre including Mr Johnathan Lane, Director of Sixth Form & Associate Assistant Headteacher
  • Hartpury College
  • Forest Sports Education
  • Delphi Engineering Systems – CANCELLED
  • High School for Girls, Gloucester
  • The Armed Forces – including the Army and Navy (including The Royal Marines)
  • Adviza – Careers Advice and Support (www.adviza.org.uk)
  • The Dean Academy Careers Team – including how and where to access information and support in-school

With application deadlines on the horizon, and Open Days passing, we hope that this event will provide a useful opportunity for you to get your questions answered in a more intimate setting than an Open Event might provide. It is being run exclusively for students, parents and carers from The Dean Academy.

If you are concerned about the event clashing with Chepstow School Open Evening, we would note that their event begins at 6:00 and ours at 4:30.  Our hope is that you might be able to visit us and follow on to Chepstow school from here in time for their later start.

We very much look forward to welcoming you tonight!

Welbeck Defence 6th Form College Information

It is that time of year again when we encourage Year 11 pupils to think about a career in the Army as an engineering officer.

Welbeck Defence 6th Form College in Leicestershire offers unrivalled facilities and academic rigour to bright students who wish to pursue a career in engineering in the Army (Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, the Royal Engineers, the Royal Signals or the Royal Logistics Corps) and benefit from the generous bursaries available at University. In order to make the most of this excellent opportunity we would encourage students who are predicted A/B grade in maths and physics to apply for the Welbeck Competition.

Applications can be made online at www.armyjobs.mod.uk and are open until 9 Jan 2016. The selection boards take place in March 2015 and successful candidates will take their places at Welbeck in September 16 if they achieve 40 UCAS points in their top 7 GCSEs (see attached factsheet for scoring guide).

Please find all the information you need about Welbeck College below including the generous financial bursary available to successful candidates.

Gloucester Army Careers Centre Post 16 Options Presentation Evening

“It gives me great pleasure to inform you of a unique Army Careers evening to be hosted by recruiters from the Army Careers Centre Gloucester. The presentation evenings are specifically aimed at informing parents, gatekeepers, influencers and Careers Advisors of the fabulous benefits and career opportunities available to young people considering a career in the British Army as a young Officer or Soldier post year 11.

With over 70 years of military experience between them, the recruiters in Bristol are in a strong position to give the best advice on entry criteria and job choices available. Soldiers cannot serve in the field Army until they are 18 years old. However, the Army provides excellent training for 16 – 18 year olds in order to gain qualifications, get fit, develop outstanding values and confidence and build skills for the future.

The presentation will take place at The High School for Girls (Denmark Road, Gloucester, GL1 3JN) on the 25th November starting at 6.45 pm

The two fundamental areas covered in the presentations will be:

Officer Entry

Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College is located in Loughborough, Leicestershire. It is a unique full-board educational establishment that mixes superb teaching, first rate facilities and military training. Its purpose is to prepare ambitious young people for an engineering or technical career as an officer in the Army.

At Welbeck students study technical A-Levels as part of the first steps in the Defence Technical Officer and Engineering Entry Scheme which leads to university and then into a professional career in the Army with financial support every step of the way

Soldier Entry

The Army Foundation College is located in Harrogate (North Yorkshire) and trains future soldiers for the many jobs available to school leavers aged between 16 and 17 years and five months. The Army Foundation College offers young men and women the opportunity to earn as they learn through military training and vocational education. All soldiers benefit from excellent welfare support, healthcare, education, sport and adventure training and team building facilities to improve confidence and self esteem.”
